Up in the Air, has two different
versions, the movie and the book. Both
are good tales in their own right, but they are fundamentally different in the
points they are trying to get across. They
were written at different times in different social and political
climates. Both works show those
attitudes in their style of storytelling.
The book written in 2001 is a third person narrative of adventure in the
life of a traveling businessman struggling
with ambitions that never pan out, relationship problems, and an
obsession with getting one million sky miles; while dealing with a life
threating disease that he ignores. The
movie filmed in 2009 is a romantic comedy trying to place value on stability,
commitment, and family life. They both
have underlying subtext lined throughout, but they don’t have the same agendas
whatsoever. They do share one basic
point, the main character, Ryan Bingham, is a selfish, egocentric, yet
well-spoken individual. This paper will
discuss the differences and similarities between both works, and why the political
climate, social changes, and economic instability shaped both works.

Chad,
ReplyDeleteYou seem to be heading in the right direction with this essay. When you talk about ambitions that never pan out for Ryan, there is quite a difference in the film and novel. It is noteworthy that the mysterious MythTech and the letter of resignation are omitted from the film. Instead, Ryan is fighting to preserve his own niche in CTC. I have a conflicting opinion about the movie placing value on family life. On one hand, Ryan reaches out to Kara’s fiancé and subdues his reservations. On the other, Alex seems to have a wonderful family life, but betrays them with regular extramarital affairs. Instead of just talking about the similarities and differences in the paper, the thesis should make a statement about how the context has influenced them. Good job.

Chad,
ReplyDeleteFirst off, good job. I think that the structure and form of your first paragraph will have you off to a great start. The issues you touch on are one of the bigger things that i realized about the diffrences. The times are just completely diffrent. a lot of things happened in that span of 7 to 8 years from the book to movie, so the dirrector of the movie is speaking to a completely diffrent america than walter kirn was speaking to.
Good luck on the essay,
John
